Embracing the FASD Journey: A Parent’s Guide to Understand, Love, and Grow

We’re diving into the wild and wonderful world of parenting adults with FASD. Buckle up for some laughs, tears, and plenty of “aha!” moments. WE ARE GOING TACKLE 30 DAYS OF FRUSTRATION, FEAR, AND DESIRES!

The FASD Rollercoaster: It’s Not Just for Kids!

Remember when you thought the teenage years were tough? Ha! Welcome to FASD adulthood, where every day is an adventure. But fear not, because understanding your adult child’s FASD is like having a secret superpower. Frustrations? We’ve got ’em!

  • “Why can’t they just remember to pay the bills?” (Spoiler: It’s not laziness, it’s executive functioning challenges)

“How come they struggle with ‘simple’ tasks?” (Plot twist: Their brain processes information differently) Fears? Oh yeah, we’re familiar:

  • “Will they ever live independently?” (Breathe easy, with the right support, many can!)
  • “What if society doesn’t understand them?” (That’s where we come in as their biggest advocates)

Desires? We’re dreaming big:

  • To see our kids thrive and find their place in the world
  • For society to recognize their unique strengths and abilities

Why Understanding FASD is Your New Superpower

  1. It’s not personal, it’s neurology: When you understand that FASD affects brain development, you’ll stop taking behaviors personally and start finding creative solutions
  2. Expectations vs. Reality: Knowing FASD helps you set realistic expectations, reducing frustration for everyone involved.
  3. Strength-based approach: Understanding FASD allows you to focus on your child’s unique strengths rather than just their challenges

Embracing the FASD Adventure

  1. Celebrate small wins: Did they remember to brush their teeth without a reminder? Throw a dance party!
  2. Find your tribe: Connect with other FASD parents. Laughter (and snacks) are best shared with those who get it.
  3. Be the change: Educate others about FASD. You might change someone’s life!

The Growth Factor

Here’s the kicker: By understanding and embracing your adult child’s FASD, you’re setting the stage for incredible growth – for them AND for you!

  • Your patience grows (sometimes to superhuman levels)
  • Their self-esteem blossoms with your unconditional support
  • Together, you discover new ways to navigate life’s challenges

Your understanding and love are the secret ingredients to helping your adult child with FASD thrive.

For the next 30 days we are digging into our FRUSTRATIONS, FEARS, and DESIRES for our adults with FASD. So keep learning, keep loving, and most importantly, keep laughing. Life with FASD is never boring!

Now go forth and conquer, you amazing FASD parents. You’ve got this!
