I never know when the overwhelm is going to blow up and spin. Here are some ideas that have helped. Remind yourself to stay calm in the present moment by paying attention to your surroundings, your thoughts, and your feelings.
Here are some fun things you can do to stay present in everyday life:
- Use daily activities as reminders. When brushing your teeth, washing dishes, or tying your shoes, use these routine tasks as cues to focus on your breath and sensations.
- Set up visual cues in your environment. Place small objects or stickers in strategic locations as reminders to pause and be mindful. Some use small toys they collect like a Lego person, small vehicle, animal, or butterfly.
- Use technology to create “take a break” reminders. Use your phone’s alarm or smartwatch to set random reminders throughout the day to take a mindful moment.
- Practice present moments (mindfulness, prayer) during transitions. Use moments like entering/exiting a room, starting your car, or opening your computer as cues to take a deep breath and center yourself.
- Use nature as a gift (prompt). When you see a bird, feel a breeze, or notice a plant, let it remind you to be present.
- Link mindfulness to physical sensations. Use hunger pangs, thirst, or the need to use the restroom as cues to check in with your body and breath.
- Create a special thing to say. Develop a short phrase like “Only this, in this moment” to repeat during specific activities like meal preparation.
- Use waiting times to calm instead of react. Turn moments of waiting (in line, at traffic lights) into opportunities for brief mindfulness practices.
