My name is Liz Kulp, and I want to share my experience with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). This condition is caused by drinking alcohol during pregnancy and has had a big impact on my life.
FASD can cause a lot of different issues, like problems with thinking, remembering things, and controlling emotions. More than that, it also causes hidden medical issues that pop up when you least expect them. These challenges make everyday tasks harder and can lead to frustration and misunderstandings.
When I was growing up, I had a tough time in school. I had to work really hard to keep up with my classmates because of my thinking problems. This made me feel like I didn’t fit.
It was also hard for me to understand social cues and get along with others because of FASD. I often had trouble controlling my impulses and emotions, which caused conflicts.
Dealing with FASD has also brought medical problems. I’ve had issues with many organs and currently in need of a dual organ transplant. I am also on dialysis as my kidney is now only working at 6%. I have to go to the doctor a lot. This is a constant reminder of how important it is for pregnant women to avoid alcohol.
Despite these challenges, I’ve learned to be strong and speak up for people with FASD. It’s important to spread the word about FASD so that pregnant women know not to drink alcohol. If they avoid alcohol, they can prevent their children from facing the same challenges.
By sharing my story, I hope to help others understand and support people with FASD. Together, we can create a more caring and informed community.
TODAY’S NOTE: I will be writing a short note each day to give you an update toward my journey of hope for a pancreas/kidney transplant. This will be a busy week with three dialysis sessions, pain psychiatry and neurology appointments. If everything goes well I will be joining my parents at the MS 150 Bike Rally next weekend as a SAG (Safety and Gear) volunteer. – In Solidarity, Liz
Thanks for sharing your story so openly and bravely, Liz. And best wishes with your transplant procedure. 🙏
